Leading Through Systemic Change: A Transformative Journey

The Sun rise - St Andrews -February 2021

As the Executive Director of Operations at National Museums Liverpool, I recently had the privilege of participating in Clore Leadership's "Leading Systemic Change" programme. This dynamic and intensive course has profoundly impacted my approach to leadership and organisational transformation.

The Power of Peer Learning

One of the most valuable aspects of the programme was the opportunity to connect with other senior cultural leaders facing similar challenges. Through collaborative discussions and shared experiences, we gained fresh perspectives on navigating the complex landscape of systemic change.

Embracing Complexity

The course emphasised the importance of understanding and embracing the inherent complexity of large-scale cultural organisations. We explored contemporary theories of change management and their practical applications in our unique contexts. This holistic approach has equipped me with new tools to address the multifaceted challenges we face at National Museums Liverpool.

From Theory to Practice

A key strength of the programme was its focus on actionable strategies. Through a combination of seminars, workshops, and action learning sets, we were able to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios. This practical approach has already begun to influence my decision-making processes and strategic planning at NML.

Fostering Inclusive Leadership

The course reinforced the critical importance of inclusive leadership in driving systemic change. We delved into strategies for creating more representative and diverse cultural institutions, aligning perfectly with NML's strategic goals .I'm excited to implement these insights as an organisation we continue to transform our waterfront and expand our community engagement initiatives.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on this transformative experience, I'm energised by the potential for positive change within our organisation and the broader cultural sector. The Clore Leadership programme has not only enhanced my personal leadership skills but has also provided a valuable network of peers and mentors to draw upon as we navigate the challenges ahead.

I encourage other senior cultural leaders to consider participating in this vital programme. The insights gained and connections forged will undoubtedly contribute to a more resilient, innovative, and inclusive cultural landscape for years to come.
